Alumni athlete spotlights are back and this week Izzy Rodriguez is being featured! Izzy graduated from Salem in 2017 and is now playing soccer for Ohio State University. Though she did not play soccer at Salem, Izzy played basketball and ran track, both of which helped her to become a better teammate and leader. If she could change one thing about her time at Salem, she would’ve loved to be able to represent Salem on the soccer field too. Izzy’s favorite memory as a Rock is when she got to compete at the state track meet during her freshman year. Her favorite thing about being a college athlete is getting to be so close with her teammates and competing with them against some of the best players in the country. Izzy describes playing a college sport as a much bigger time commitment, taking more planning than sports in high school did. Deciding to play at the next level was an easy decision for her to make. Izzy has always loved playing soccer, and now she gets to do it while getting an education and becoming more successful in the international game at the same time. Her biggest challenge has been staying organized with school while traveling with the U20 U.S. National Team. The most important lesson that soccer has taught Izzy is to only worry about what you can control. Do what you can to be your best and let the rest handle itself. Her advice to current student-athletes at Salem is to enjoy the experience of getting to represent your school while having fun and working hard!
