Rocks News · Boys XC Finishes 8th @ State Finals


The Salem Boys Cross Country team finished 8th place at the State Finals today at Michigan International Speedway.  This ties Salem’s highest team finish since 1989 (6th), capping the most successful season in school history.  On the year, the Rocks finished 10-0 in XC dual meets, won the KLAA West, the KLAA, the District, and Regional Championships.  Salem also finished in the top 10 at the State Finals for the first time since the late-1990s.

Salem was led by an all-state performance from senior Talha Syed, who finished 9th place overall in a time of 15:41.77.  This is his first all-state award.  The next five finishers for Salem were also seniors: Gary Gardella finished 63rd (16:25.43), Hezekiah Williams finished 83rd (16:34.26), Gavin Ray finished 122nd (16:47.94), Abhi Surampudi finished 144th (17:01.91), and Evan Wheeler finished 152nd (17:03.84).  Junior Andrew Laesch rounded out the varsity, finishing 188th (17:23.82).
