Coach Dave Gerlach’s Comments:
“What a beautiful yet unbelievable day. Mid 60’s today and I can’t remember the last time it was over 45 degrees at the November State Final. With the Covid pandemic things were very different out at MIS this year. No fans were allowed out on the infield. No team vehicles or tents were allowed either. Two different D-1 girls races , one with 1st & 2nd place teams from regional and one with 3rd place teams and all individual qualifiers. Then the results were merged. It was eerily quiet and empty .The last three days it has been unseasonably warm (Mid 60’s). and I think it really affected all of the athletes today. Times were slow across the board and my girls were having a hard time breathing out there. We had a really good box (#2) and were starting with no one to our inside. Olivia & Reagan got out aggressive which is what we wanted. The rest of the girls were toward the back end but that was ok, everyone at the State Finals is good. Coming through the mile mark our splits were a bit slow. At the mile and a quarter the girls were locked into different packs and rolled through the two mile. Entering the stadium we had faded a bit back but were battling to keep in the race. The final 400 meters are right in front of the grandstands and it was great to finally hear the noise of parents cheering. We had a goal of finishing in the top 20 today and going after one of our rivals who has beaten us multiple times. Finishing in 15th and beating them was a great way to end this season. I am very proud of not only this State team, but my entire 2020 Salem girls XC team. The stress of online school, all of the unknowns, anxiety of if we were going to get shut down or will there even be a tomorrow, not being able to see their teammates as much, an enormous amount of daily Covid protocols and all of the disappointing cancellations from training camp to our team building activities. Nothing was “normal” to them. Yet this entire team overcame the adversities to still be successful and create some memories. This team and these girls deserve a ton of credit for what they have accomplished.”
